It’s the second week of the World Cup, and the focus for many is on the matches, often resulting in late nights due to different time zones. The tournament’s location in the United States has led to sleep disruptions for some, but for FIFA, this means increased profits. This event is set to become the most profitable World Cup in history.
FIFA has long aimed to captivate the American audience, which partly explains the strong relationship between Gianni Infantino, FIFA’s president, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. Infantino’s bond with Trump is notably closer than any previous FIFA president’s connection with a world leader, influencing the organization’s direction.
Recently, journalists Rebecca Ruiz and Tariq Panja discussed what they describe as the Trumpification of FIFA.

Ruiz and Panja report that most recall the peace prize incident. Last fall, Infantino had a notable idea after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan politician MarĂa Corina Machado. Trump, who had sought the prize, was displeased.
Seeing an opportunity to strengthen ties with Trump, Infantino proposed that FIFA introduce its own peace prize, with Trump as the first recipient. This initiative demonstrates Infantino’s ongoing efforts to align FIFA more closely with Trump’s influence.
