Compromise poses a challenge for Trump. He has consistently dismissed concerns about falling poll numbers, a slowing economy, and declining U.S. military stockpiles after initiating conflict with Iran over five months ago.
According to Eliot Cohen, a former counselor at the State Department under President George W. Bush, Trump’s perspective often divides the world into winners and losers. Compromising might be perceived as a loss, which could be unacceptable for him.
Strait of Hormuz Dispute
The central issue pertains to control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passageway through which 20% of the world’s oil passes. The Trump administration has firmly rejected any deal allowing Iran to exert control over the waterway, especially if it includes charging fees. On the other hand, Iran remains insistent on maintaining some level of control, forfeiting the notion of the strait as an unrestricted international waterway.
Despite repeated U.S. strikes, Iran possesses the capability to launch drones and missiles at ships, giving it the upper hand over commercial shipping.

For Trump, making concessions could be politically risky, particularly if the ongoing conflict results in sustained high gasoline prices, affecting the Republican stance in upcoming midterm elections. However, David Schenker, a former State Department official, believes economic pressures might push Trump toward compromise due to the urgency of resolving the crisis.

Despite the war, Trump has shared little about the conflict’s details. He asserted on social media that the U.S. military holds substantial weaponry and that production continues at pace. Recent allegations about U.S. weapon stockpile shortages have resulted in Trump doubling down on the nation’s military capacity.
During a meeting at Camp David, Trump expressed frustration over the diminishing weapon inventories. Experts have raised concerns over shortages of critical items, such as missile interceptors, which are vital for defending U.S. troops from Iranian assaults.
The Pentagon has requested substantial funding from Congress to address these supply issues.
Polls and Public Perception
Trump has claimed on social media that his approval ratings are exceptionally high, citing achievements such as employment figures and the “denuclearization of Iran.” However, a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center indicates the majority of Americans, across party lines, question the merits of the conflict with Iran.
Job growth has slowed in Trump’s second term, despite the U.S. boasting record high employment numbers.

Trump maintains that the Strait of Hormuz is open to shipping, pointing to a naval blockade of Iranian ports. Pursuing a Temporary Solution
Negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials center around reopening the strait under a temporary agreement. This approach would allow ships to traverse an Iranian-controlled route into the Persian Gulf and exit via an Omani-controlled passage.
