Trump’s Image on New Delhi’s Auto-Rickshaws: A Unique Advertising Campaign

New Delhi’s traffic, known for its chaos and vibrant displays on auto-rickshaws, now features an unexpected addition: U.S. President Donald Trump. Auto-rickshaws in the capital showcase his portrait with the message, ‘Happy Birthday America!’

About 100 auto-rickshaws carry large images of Trump and the Statue of Liberty. This American branding stands out amid typical local ads for fertility clinics and English courses.

Last month, U.S. ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, introduced this unique advertising campaign. It forms part of a broader initiative to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, including celebrations and cultural events in various countries.

The U.S. Embassy announced this campaign on social media, stating, ‘Freedom is on the move … literally!’ It encouraged Delhi residents to flag down these auto-rickshaws and engage with the campaign.

The initiative aims to strengthen U.S.-India relations, which have been strained due to Trump’s tariff policies increasing duties on Indian exports. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s upcoming visit to New Delhi this weekend highlights this diplomatic effort.

For most auto-rickshaw drivers, the campaign holds little significance. For instance, Ganesh Kumar, initially hesitant about the poster on his vehicle, accepted it after being offered a packet of tea. Another driver, Pradeep Kumar, chose to participate because his vehicle’s canopy needed covering. When asked about the ad’s message, he identified Trump but knew little else.
