On July 31, 2026, President Donald Trump arrived at Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey after visiting Camp David. In a social media post later that evening, Trump revealed that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries requested the United States hold off any planned attack on Iran. He stated that this pause was due to an agreement on the “perimeters of a deal.”
Previous reports indicated that the U.S. and Israel were preparing to target Iran’s energy infrastructure. Trump’s post on his Truth social platform mentioned that the U.S. “is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran.” However, following requests from Tehran and other nations, the attack was canceled, pending the ability to quickly reach a deal. Israel was also noted as part of this commitment.
Trump described the proposed deal as including “the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.” While Iran asserts its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes, there has been no comment from Iranian officials on Trump’s announcement.
Responding to Trump’s claims, Mehr, a semi-official news agency linked to the Iranian government, dismissed them as “simply a new lie,” citing unnamed Iranian military officials. The situation marks another unexpected shift since the U.S. and Israel initiated conflict with Iran in February. A recent poll by the Associated Press indicates that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the war is not justified.
