Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a severe ankle injury during the game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Initially unaware of the extent of the injury, Thornton’s reaction followed his attempt to stand up after the play.
During the fourth quarter, with Kansas City trailing 19-17, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a deep pass to Thornton on a third-and-4. Thornton caught the 55-yard pass before being tackled by Raiders safety Treydan Stukes, who fell onto Thornton’s left ankle.
Looking to celebrate the play, Thornton soon realized his left foot was misaligned. The scene was graphic, prompting CBS announcers Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt to express their shock.
Medical staff quickly placed Thornton’s left leg in an air cast before he was taken off the field. As of now, the Chiefs have reported the injury as an ankle issue but have not provided precise details.
Thornton, initially drafted by the Patriots in 2022, found a role with the Chiefs after joining their practice squad in late 2024. He made the roster in 2025 after a solid season with 438 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Going into Sunday’s game, Thornton had 108 receiving yards in his past two games. He achieved his first 100-yard game in the NFL with five catches totaling 111 yards and two touchdowns before the injury occurred.
The Chiefs faced challenges in the game, missing Rashee Rice, who left with a hamstring injury. Rice had achieved 190 receiving yards across three games, further impacting Kansas City’s receiver lineup.
Thornton’s significant play set up Kenneth Walker’s decisive touchdown, leading to the Chiefs’ 30-27 victory, advancing their record to 4-0.
The seriousness of Thornton’s injury remains uncertain, though it appeared dire at the time.
