U.S. and Iran Clash at U.N. Security Council Over Gulf Attacks

During a recent U.N. Security Council meeting, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz criticized Iran, asserting that Tehran could not silence the council. His remarks came after Iran’s representative accused the council of spreading falsehoods about Iran’s recent attacks on neighboring Gulf states.

“Let me remind you where you are,” Waltz told Iranian diplomat Amir Saeid Iravani. “This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations Security Council. You will not silence this body.”

The emergency meeting was prompted by drone and missile attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait following new U.S. airstrikes against Iran. Iran has faced strong condemnation from Gulf countries, which described these attacks as a rise in regional tensions.

During his speech, Iravani contended the council’s meeting was unnecessary and accused the U.S. and Bahrain of lying. He refuted accusations from Western council members and Bahrain’s representative, labeling them as baseless.

Describing the current crisis, Iravani said Western nations neglected the aggressive acts against Iran, insisting that victims were unfairly blamed. He accused these countries of displaying double standards and hypocrisy.

In a post on social media, Waltz maintained his stance, asserting that Iran’s tactics of silencing will not succeed at the U.N. Security Council.

Waltz displayed images depicting the aftermath of the Iranian attacks, showing damage to civilian areas like a family home, a hotel, and a building used by first responders. He challenged the Iranian narrative by questioning if the council was there to denounce these victims as liars.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani reported that Bahrain had experienced 808 attacks involving ballistic missiles and armed drones since February 28. He emphasized that the attacks targeted civilian areas, leading to casualties and injuries.

Washington and Tehran continue to accuse each other of breaching a ceasefire agreement. President Donald Trump recently stated that U.S. forces had struck Iranian targets after a ceasefire violation.

This exchange of hostilities began when an Iranian drone attacked a merchant vessel near Oman, prompting U.S. military retaliation. Trump warned on social media that continued aggression might force the U.S. into further military action.
