The U.S. government has suspended its operations in Mexicali, located in Baja California, Mexico. This decision follows concerns about a ‘potential threat’ in the region. U.S. authorities have advised American citizens to avoid traveling to this border city.
The U.S. Mission to Mexico has restricted its operations and movement in Mexicali as of Tuesday. American citizens in the area are encouraged to:
- Avoid visiting government buildings in Mexicali.
- Find shelter if an incident occurs.
- Communicate their safety status to friends and family should an incident arise.
- Follow directives from Mexican law enforcement.
- Stay informed by monitoring local media outlets.
- Remain observant of their environment.
Authorities have yet to release specific information about the nature of the threat in Mexicali. Currently, Baja California is classified as a ‘Level 2’ risk for travelers from the U.S. This level urges travelers to ‘exercise caution due to terrorism and crime’ when in the state.
