Uber Passenger’s Concerns Highlight Rideshare Safety

A recent late-night incident involving an Uber ride has raised awareness about passenger safety during rideshare experiences. This comes after a woman shared a video on TikTok describing her uneasy experience during a 3 a.m. Uber trip.

Unexpected Detour Raises Concerns

According to the woman’s account, the Uber driver requested a stop at a parking garage for 15 to 20 minutes to recharge his electric vehicle. At that time, the car had a 43% charge, and she was 25 minutes away from her destination. Her apprehension grew when the driver missed an exit on the highway. The incident prompted her to end the trip and involve law enforcement.

Uber’s Response to Safety Concerns

Uber investigated the report and confirmed taking appropriate action to address the issue. The company emphasized its commitment to passenger safety and pointed to features like the emergency button and GPS tracking in their app as safeguards for riders.

Expert Insights on Safety Measures

Dillon Abend, CEO of rideshare safety app 3rd-i, highlighted that unexpected route changes can be unsettling for passengers, especially during solo, late-night trips. Abend has heard similar concerns from numerous college students.

To enhance safety, Abend advised sharing trip details and location with a trusted group, checking vehicle information before entering, and ensuring a match between the driver and car with the app’s details.

The What’s My Name Foundation’s Role

Seymour Josephson, co-president of the What’s My Name Foundation, has collaborated with Uber and Lyft to promote safety on college campuses. The foundation was established after the tragic loss of his daughter, Samantha, in 2019 due to a mistaken identity with a rideshare vehicle.

The foundation encourages passengers to follow the “SAMI” steps: stop before entering a vehicle, ask the driver, “What’s my name?”, match the car’s license plate with the app’s data, and inform someone of your plans.

Seymour Josephson aims to enhance safety rather than discourage rideshare use, citing the implementation of a four-digit PIN system with Uber and now Lyft as an added safety measure.
