Terrorist attacks can occur both internationally and domestically. The FBI describes international terrorism as violent, criminal acts carried out by individuals or groups inspired by foreign terrorist organizations or state sponsors. Examples include Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Hamas, and the Taliban, recognized by the U.S. government as foreign terrorist organizations.
Domestic terrorism, conversely, involves violent, criminal acts aimed at furthering ideological goals born from political, religious, social, racial, or environmental influences within a country. The FBI is tasked with investigating and preventing both types of terrorism in the United States.
A significant event in American history was the attack on September 11, 2001. On this day, Al-Qaeda orchestrated a series of terrorist attacks where commercial airplanes hit the Twin Towers in New York City, the Pentagon, and a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania. These attacks were led by Osama bin Laden, who was killed by Navy SEALs in May 2011 while President Barack Obama was in office.
