Unveiling Mystery in 19th-Century Church Renovation

A fascinating discovery has captured the attention of millions online, as a couple renovates a 19th-century church in upstate New York. Lauren Gunderman, 31, and her partner are transforming the 1872 church into a luxury wedding and events venue. Their journey took an unexpected turn when they found two exterior windows corresponding to no apparent interior space.

The Stately on Main, a former Presbyterian church in Waterville, is the focus of their quest. Documenting their search for what they believe is a concealed space, the couple has ignited widespread online intrigue. Viewers have shared theories, cautions, and expert advice in a collective effort to unravel the mystery.

In a video shared on Instagram on May 25 by @127eastmain, Gunderman and her partner attempt to access the so-called “mystery room.” The couple focuses on a potential entry point in the ceiling, where wooden boards hint at a hidden space. With hopes high, they begin to pull away the boards, looking for access. “How the hell we get into this mystery room?” the video ponders.

“Another attempt at getting into the mystery room in my 1872 church! Why am I wearing pink slides with socks?”

The journey began when the couple noticed two unusual exterior windows with no corresponding visible interior room. Their conviction led them to search tirelessly for an entry point. A small opening beneath the area thought to house the room was found, boarded over in a way that raised their hopes. However, upon removing the boards and lowering a phone to investigate, the search revealed only more structural elements, with no confirmation of a hidden room.

Though the room remains elusive, Gunderman suggested to viewers that a mystery solution may be at hand. After discussions with organ experts, it seems likely that the windows were boarded up in the organ room amid its electrification. However, the prospect of disturbing the organ pipes suggests the truth may never fully come to light.

The viral journey captivated an audience, amassing 4.9 million views and over 137,000 likes. Comments varied from humorous to cautionary. Jk_its_me_scarlett joked, “So you bought an old church with a boarded-off room… and your first thought was how do we get in there? That’s where the demon sleeps.” Oscar.a.mejia added, “Old church, boarded up room, yep I’m not opening that up!” Starcatcher1966 reflected, “So, you bought an old church, found a closed-off, completely sealed space and your first thought is how do I get in?? Nope nope nope…have it blessed and hope whatever they boarded up/sealed in there stays in there.”
