Potential in Cancer Treatment
A study by the American Association for Cancer Research indicates Viagra might help prevent cancer spread. Researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, led by Dr. Yarden Ariav under Professor Ayelet Erez, explored this possibility. The active ingredient, sildenafil, might restrict cancer metastasis.
The team analyzed both human and mouse cancer cells, conducting genetic experiments. They studied 20 years of health data from Clalit Health Services, Israel’s largest nonprofit healthcare provider.
Sildenafil limits a cancer cell’s ability to use cholesterol. This process is crucial as cancer cells detach from the primary tumor and migrate through the body.
Mechanism of Action
Sildenafil blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) and elevates cGMP levels. This compound dilates blood vessels, a key reason for its success in treating erectile dysfunction.
Moreover, cGMP binds to a protein that moves cholesterol within cells, cutting down available cholesterol for vital cellular functions. Cancer cells could be vulnerable to reduced cholesterol supply.
Combination Therapy
Researchers propose that Viagra-like drugs plus statins might slow cancer spread. Statins reduce cholesterol production, further limiting tumor cells’ cholesterol access.
The research reveals a biologic pathway linking signaling molecules to cholesterol regulation. The team emphasizes that cancer biology involves more than tumor mutations; a patient’s metabolism and existing medications play a role.
Considerations and Limitations
The study used mouse models which might limit human application. Observational human evidence can show associations but not cause and effect.
