The Washington Commanders’ offense will experience a significant challenge with the absence of left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Head coach Dan Quinn announced that Tunsil will be out indefinitely due to the need for surgery on his torn triceps.
Quinn expressed the impact of losing Tunsil, stating, “It’s always tough to talk about a player missing time, and especially a great player like LT. He is an absolutely fantastic teammate, and he’ll be missed. We certainly can’t wait to get him back.”
Tunsil, aged 32, sustained the injury during an individual drill against pass rusher Odafe Oweh. The incident led to his immediate exit to consult the training staff.
The Commanders had previously secured Tunsil with a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension in March, making him the highest-paid tackle in the NFL with an annual income of $30 million. Drafted as the 13th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins, Tunsil’s career spans three seasons with Miami, followed by a trade to the Houston Texans, with six seasons there.
Last season, Tunsil joined the Commanders, contributing in 14 games. He remains a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the top left tackles in the league.
Without Tunsil, the Commanders will rely on Brandon Coleman to step in. Having started 12 games as a rookie in 2024, Coleman performed commendably and made three starts in the subsequent season.
Quinn believes in Coleman’s capability, stating, “He’s played a lot of winning football at left tackle here, and we know that he’s ready for it. He’s put in an excellent offseason, and the team is very confident in him.”
The Commanders do not plan to seek free agency help at this time, as confirmed by Quinn and general manager Adam Peters. Veteran Andrew Wylie will maintain his role as a backup swing tackle.
