During the final innings at Rate Field, Chicago White Sox fans in the left-field upper deck chanted for Shohei Ohtani as their team faced the Los Angeles Dodgers. While Ohtani didn’t play due to a knee injury, the White Sox still managed an 8-2 victory in their series opener against the reigning World Series champions.
Miguel Vargas, the White Sox third baseman, emphasized the importance of facing the Dodgers, stating, “We want to play this type of team; they are really good, and see how we are. We did a really good job today. We are very excited for this series.”
The victory marked the White Sox’s eighth consecutive home win and their 23rd home victory of the season, only trailing the Tampa Bay Rays in home performance. Chase Meidroth, second baseman, credited the enthusiastic home crowd for the team’s strong showing, saying, “It’s the fans showing up every day. It’s so exciting to come back to it. We love playing home games.”
In a standout fifth inning, the White Sox scored seven runs with contributions from several players, including Vargas and Tristan Peters who delivered an opposite-field double and a two-run triple, respectively. The fans’ excitement provided a boost to the team’s energy during the inning.

The Dodgers struggled, especially after a promising second inning that saw Santiago Espinal drive in two runs. White Sox starter Anthony Kay subdued further threats, striking out Andy Pages and forcing a fly ball from Freddie Freeman to escape the bases-loaded situation.
Meidroth praised Kay’s resilience, calling him “a dog” for his efforts. Kay noted his effective arsenal, particularly his slider, which aided him in striking out seven and allowing just two runs over five innings. Vargas, celebrating a three-hit game against his former team, expressed his competitive spirit, stating, “I want to beat not just the Dodgers, I want to beat everyone.”
