The Detroit Red Wings have experienced significant changes during this offseason. On Wednesday, franchise icon Steve Yzerman announced he was stepping down from his role as general manager. He will continue with the organization as an advisor to CEO Chris Ilitch.
According to NHL.com, the Red Wings have begun their search for a new general manager. They are considering both internal and external candidates for the position.
Yzerman holds a special place as one of the greatest Red Wings players, having captained three Stanley Cup-winning teams. The 2002 Red Wings roster, in particular, is noted for its strong lineup. Some speculate its strength contributed to the NHL’s decision to institute a salary cap.
After a successful stint as the GM of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Yzerman returned to Detroit in 2019 with hopes of leading the Red Wings back to the top. Despite these hopes, the team did not make the postseason during his seven-year tenure.
This failure led to captain Dylan Larkin, a Detroit native, requesting a trade. The situation highlights the risks associated with hiring a franchise legend as team manager. While Yzerman’s history with the organization allowed him a longer tenure than a less-connected individual might have had, his record did not meet expectations.
Yzerman’s departure and Larkin’s trade request reflect the organization’s struggles. A key question remains: will the change in leadership influence Larkin’s decision to leave? Convincing him to stay will be a crucial task for the incoming general manager.
