Federal Appeals Court Rules Georgetown Scholar Can Remain Free

Georgetown University researcher Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national, expressed concerns of being wrongfully targeted by immigration authorities. He believes this action was due to his family’s support for Palestinians in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Suri was apprehended from his Virginia residence by federal immigration officers last year. He was subsequently transferred between multiple detention facilities. On May 14, 2025, a judge ordered his release from a detention center in Texas. He was greeted by his wife, Mapheze Saleh, upon arrival at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Recently, a federal appeals court confirmed that Suri may remain free on bond. The decision came after the scholar challenged his detention and argued for his release.
