When Eva Benefield’s uncle Dave called her with “some really bad news,” her immediate reaction was to think of her stepmother, Ashley Benefield. “She killed him, didn’t she?” Eva asked. Her uncle confirmed that her father, Doug Benefield, had been fatally shot.
Eva quickly suspected Ashley, her former ballerina stepmother. Ashley had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2020 killing of Doug Benefield. Although Ashley claimed she acted in self-defense, a jury found her guilty of manslaughter.

Eva shared her father’s case on TikTok, where she detailed her suspicions about Ashley. “She called the cops and CPS on my dad multiple times,” Eva said, highlighting the tension in their household. “When my uncle mentioned the shooting, I just knew.”
Doug’s killing was widely covered, often called “The Black Swan Case,” resonating with fans of Natalie Portman’s psychological thriller. Reflecting on this tragedy, Eva shares her thoughts in her memoir, Ghost Girl: Surviving the Black Swan Murder.
Eva, who lost her mother, Renee Benefield, to a heart condition while still in high school, described the ensuing months as precious time spent with her father. “Those nine months, between my mom passing and my dad marrying Ashley, hold my best memories with him,” she remarked.
Despite feeling close to her dad during this period, their relationship faced strains after Doug married Ashley. Doug was captivated by Ashley shortly after meeting her, marrying her just 13 days later. Eva, unaware of the marriage at first, recalled her misgivings about Ashley from the start.
Describing her stepmother’s attempts to control the household dynamic, Eva felt ostracized and targeted. Ashley’s actions included removing traces of Eva’s late mother from their home, which caused deep emotional wounds. “There were pictures, a letter from my mom—all gone,” Eva remembered.
In 2017, Ashley founded the American National Ballet, a company in Charleston that Doug supported eagerly. However, the endeavor failed, prompting Ashley to move to Florida, further straining their relationship. Doug remained focused on mending ties and being present for their daughter, Emerson.
Amidst recurring allegations and tensions, Doug continued to hope for improvement. But with conflicts escalating, Ashley ultimately claimed self-defense after shooting Doug during a custody dispute over Emerson in 2020.
Upon facing Ashley in court, Eva grappled with strong emotions but remained steadfast in seeking justice for her father. “I needed to show her that I’m strong,” she emphasized. Ashley was originally charged with second-degree murder but was convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter after a lengthy deliberation process.
Today, Eva, a TikTok creator and apparel company owner based in Charleston, focuses on the future while cherishing her father’s legacy. “I wish he could have left that situation,” she reflected, “but I hope he knows his daughter turned out OK.”
