America250 Time Capsule Sealed to Capture National Spirit

The America250 committee, a non-partisan group, has advanced a project to document the nation’s identity. The initiative, separate from the Trump-associated Freedom 250, involves sealing a time capsule with contributions from every U.S. state and territory. This capsule is intended to remain closed for 250 years, capturing the American spirit for future generations.

Rosie Rios, chair of America250, emphasized the significance of this moment as both a nod to the past and a gift to the future. The time capsule will be interred on July 4 at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, set to be unearthed on the same date in 2276. Its contents are expected to present a narrative of America at 250 years.

Items for the time capsule came from across the United States, including all states, Washington, D.C., and five territories. Each item was carefully curated to withstand degradation over time. Officials from the three branches of government, along with America250 partners such as Apple, Coca-Cola, and the Smithsonian Institution, made notable contributions.

To illustrate, Alabama included poems by James Matthew Wilson, while Alaska provided an archival map of the Russian settlement in Sitka. Arizona contributed copper ingots and commemorative coins etched with the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. A diamond from Arkansas’s Crater of Diamonds and a letter from Governor Gavin Newsom of California also feature among the items.

A range of unique and historical artifacts include Illinois’ poem by Mark Turcotte, Michigan’s state stone (Petosky stone), and Nevada’s casino gambling chips. New Mexico included a rich collection embracing its diverse culture, from an artist’s red chile tile to a Pueblo seed pot.

Partners contributed notable items such as the iPhone 17 Pro Max from Apple and a Coca-Cola bottle along with a lyric sheet from the company. The Supreme Court justices signed a pocket-sized Constitution copy included by the International Olympic Committee and NBC.

There’s great hope in what this capsule represents and the messages that are put in it, noted project manager Tom Medema. The effort embodies a theme of optimism evident in the various submissions.
