Analyzing Dan Orlovsky’s Take on Quarterbacks After Week 1 Upsets

Week 1 of the NFL season brought unexpected results, notably the Arizona Cardinals defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, led by Justin Herbert. This upset sparked discussions among analysts, including former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who shared his opinions on quarterbacks during an appearance on ESPN 2’s “Unsportsmanlike” with Evan Cohen, Chris Canty, and Michelle Smallmon.

Evan Cohen questioned Orlovsky’s preference for Herbert over Jalen Hurts. “Why do you love quarterbacks who haven’t done it versus those who have? Why do you love Herbert…why do you not love Jalen Hurts?” he asked. This inquiry followed Hurts’ impressive performance in a win over the Washington Commanders, where he completed 14 of 25 passes for 203 yards, scored three passing touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown.

Orlovsky admitted he initially judged Hurts based on his college performance and was skeptical when the Eagles replaced Carson Wentz with Hurts. However, he acknowledged, “I think why you’re a fan of Herbert is because that’s what it should look like. Your brain tells you that’s what it should look like.”

Orlovsky highlighted Herbert’s past strong performances, despite conceding that his Week 1 showing was poor. He maintained his support for Hurts, stating, “I’m a Hurts guy, now.”

Orlovsky’s admiration for Herbert was evident during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” predicting Herbert to be top five in the MVP race by Thanksgiving and favoring the Chargers over the Chiefs in the AFC West.

In Week 1, Herbert completed 17 of 27 passes for 209 yards, scored one touchdown, but also had an interception in the 26-14 loss to the Cardinals. Jacoby Brissett led Arizona with 277 passing yards and a touchdown, contributing to their 393 yards of total offense.

The question remains if Herbert can guide the Chargers to a significant playoff run, given his 0-3 postseason record. His next opportunity comes against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, September 20, at 4:05 p.m. ET.
