Controversial Teacher Honored in Yearbook Despite Past Comments

A high school in Rhode Island is facing renewed criticism after the 2026 yearbook honored a teacher who previously caused uproar with comments about Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.

Following Kirk’s assassination on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University during his ‘American Comeback Tour,’ Benjamin Fillo, a social studies teacher at Barrington High School, posted a video online referring to Kirk as ‘garbage.’ He accused Kirk of being against the LGBTQ community and women’s rights, which sparked outrage. The video concluded with Fillo expressing that Kirk’s rhetoric led to his demise.

In response to his comments, the school placed Fillo on administrative leave. However, by December 1, he resumed teaching despite breaking the district’s social media guidelines, according to interim Superintendent Bob Mitchell.

The school yearbook’s dedication praises Fillo, stating that any student under his guidance is fortunate. It highlights his dedication and energy in teaching, adding a mention of his fashion sense. The dedication message was signed by ‘Karthik and Nachi on behalf of the Class of 2026.’

According to the school spokesperson, the yearbook dedication is exclusively voted on by the senior class. They emphasized that the school seeks to recognize students’ achievements and contributions.

Parents Heather and Jarrod Ryan expressed disappointment over the selection of a teacher who has openly endorsed political violence directed at a particular party. They suggested the dedication would have been more fitting for a retiring vice principal, appreciated for their dedication and respect within the community.

The yearbook issue has reignited discussions about political discourse and its place in educational settings. Fox News Digital sought comments from Fillo but received no immediate reply.
