Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s Son Sentenced to Four Years in Prison

Marius Borg Hoiby, the eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, received a four-year prison sentence on Monday. This followed his conviction on two counts of rape and 32 other offenses.

The court found him guilty of two out of four rape charges but acquitted him of the other two. Hoiby was also convicted of assault and abuse in close relationships. In addition to imprisonment, he must compensate the victims.

Charged with sexually assaulting four women from 2018 to 2024, Hoiby faced 40 criminal charges. These included assault, drug-related crimes, and violating a restraining order. He denied the rape allegations but admitted to several lesser offenses.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of over seven years, while defense lawyers pushed for acquittal and a shorter sentence of 18 months. This sentence can still be appealed. Hoiby’s defense lawyer, Ellen Holager Andenaes, mentioned the possibility of appealing the convictions he denied.

Sturla Henriksbo, the prosecutor, deemed the verdict a victory for justice, emphasizing the law’s reach regardless of one’s connections. Hoiby watched the verdict from prison due to health reasons. The trial’s conclusion in March came after testimonies from accusers and digital evidence from Hoiby’s cellphone.

The case attracted significant international attention because of Hoiby’s ties to the royal family, adding to their distress. Raised by Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit, Hoiby has no official royal role.

The situation has taken a toll on Mette-Marit’s health. She suffers from pulmonary fibrosis and awaits a lung transplant. The legal debates included discussions about whether Hoiby should receive temporary release, but appeals courts decided against it.

This trial coincided with renewed scrutiny of the royal family. This followed revelations of Mette-Marit’s past interactions with Jeffrey Epstein. She expressed regret over this association, maintaining her innocence in any wrongdoing.
