Democrat Talarico and Republican Paxton Vie for Crucial Texas Senate Seat

Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton engaged in a heated Senate battle in Tarrant County, holding competing rallies in Fort Worth. This contest is among the nation’s most competitive Senate races. Tarrant County’s political landscape has been unpredictable over the past decade. In the 2018 Senate race, Democrat Beto O’Rourke narrowly defeated Senator Ted Cruz in the county. In presidential elections, Joe Biden edged out Donald Trump in 2020, but Trump regained the county in 2024 against Kamala Harris.

Events on the Campaign Trail

Talarico and Paxton both campaigned in Fort Worth, signaling the county’s significance. Talarico began his day with a rally at the University of North Texas in Denton and continued to North Crowley High School in Fort Worth. His “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts” tour started in Plano and will cover many locations across Texas. Paxton also held a rally in Fort Worth, joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Governor Greg Abbott. Paxton emphasized early voting and criticized Talarico on several issues.

Talarico counteracted by highlighting Paxton’s legal and ethical controversies and focusing on affordability issues. He accused Paxton of being corrupt and a detriment to Texas politics. Paxton’s “Come and Take It” tour presents him as a defender of traditional Texas values. Both candidates’ messaging underscores their respective priorities.

Fundraising Dynamics

Talarico has a notable fundraising advantage over Paxton in Tarrant County. According to Newsweek, Talarico raised $730,047 from approximately 2,560 county donors during the third quarter, while Paxton collected $304,148 from about 570 donors. Talarico’s campaign outpaced Paxton in most ZIP codes in the county. Even in traditionally Republican-leaning suburbs, Talarico gained more support, highlighting his broader appeal.

Despite Talarico’s fundraising edge, Paxton benefits from significant contributions from a few wealthy donors through the Paxton Victory committee, which supports other Republican initiatives.

Polls and Voter Sentiment

Recent polls reveal a tight race, with Talarico slightly leading in several surveys. A University of Houston poll showed Talarico ahead by 2 points. Republican defections contribute to his lead, as some Republicans plan to vote for him. Other polls, such as CBS News/YouGov, indicate a competitive race, with narrow leads for Talarico. Noteworthy, Paxton only leads in one of the six latest public polls.

The suburbs play a critical role, with Republicans relying heavily on these areas for support. Paxton faces challenges in matching Talarico’s surge in these pivotal locations.

Voting and Broader Implications

Early voting commenced on October 19 and continues until October 30, with Election Day set for November 3. Voter turnout is expected to be high, consistent with the state’s record registration numbers.

The Texas Senate race holds national significance as Democrats aim to gain the seat, challenging the current Republican majority. With Paxton emerging as the nominee after defeating Senator John Cornyn in a primary runoff, the race has captured national attention. The competition’s high stakes and financial investment reflect its importance in the 2026 midterm elections.

Political observers consider the Texas race a toss-up, with potential implications for the balance of power in the Senate. As both campaigns navigate the final days leading to Election Day, their strategies will be critical in determining the outcome of this pivotal election.
