The NFC North division was quite competitive last year, with every team managing to win at least nine games. However, both the Vikings and the Lions missed the postseason. This raises the question: will the Lions return to the playoffs this year, or face disappointment again?
Last Season’s Performance
Last year, expectations were high for the Lions. They seemed promising at the start, maintaining a strong performance in the first half of the season. Despite losing Ben Johnson to the Bears, their offensive potential remained, thanks to talented players and a solid defense. However, after a strong start, they faltered post-bye week, finishing with a 4-6 record over the last ten games. Only one of these losses was by more than one score, indicating that improvement may be achievable this year.

Offseason Changes
With Ben Johnson moving to the Bears, the Lions experienced a dip in offensive sharpness. Nevertheless, they brought in Drew Petzing, which could lead to an offensive boost. Changes on the offensive line occurred, but efforts were made to strengthen it. The departure of David Montgomery to the Texans was notable, with Isiah Pacheco stepping in. Though lacking Montgomery’s physicality, Pacheco offers a fresh dynamic. The team also extended contracts for a few players, maintaining stability in other areas.

Team Roster
Reviewing last year’s performance and tight games, the Lions aim to make minor adjustments to return to the playoffs. Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to play a more significant role, especially with Montgomery’s exit. Amon-Ra St. Brown remains a top-tier wide receiver, complementing Jared Goff’s passes effectively. A robust offensive line could ensure the Lions’ offense performs well. The defense’s success hinges on player health, particularly Aidan Hutchinson’s contributions. While there are concerns about the secondary, the team remains optimistic.

Betting Outlook
The Lions’ win total is projected at 10.5, a target within reach considering their schedule. They hold a favorable chance of winning the division at +170, given an easier schedule compared to the Bears and Packers. The Vikings pose a challenge with their quarterback competition, adding to the Lions’ prospects. Additionally, the Lions are set at +170 to secure three wins in their first five games. With home games against the Saints and Jets, those victories seem plausible. Though road games against the Bills and Panthers will be challenging, a win over Arizona is anticipated. Amon-Ra St. Brown is favored to exceed 1249.5 receiving yards, having achieved this in the past three years.
