Prominent musician Art Garfunkel has joined a growing list of celebrities contemplating leaving the U.S. This decision comes as a response to the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration. In an interview with The Guardian, Garfunkel, aged 84, conveyed concerns about America’s position on various issues. “I don’t like America’s position at all,” he stated, considering moving elsewhere.

Concerns raised by Garfunkel include climate change and international affairs. He also criticized Trump’s military intervention that targeted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is currently facing federal charges.
Garfunkel remarked, “When Donald Trump took over Venezuela, are those the new rules? Just take over a country and run it?” He added, “It’s shocking, and you think, ‘How on earth are we gonna change the presidency?’ But Trump won’t last forever, so we’ve got to hope.” Garfunkel is among the latest American celebrities considering relocating abroad due to dissatisfaction with Trump’s presidency.
Comedian Rosie O’Donnell relocated to Ireland following Trump’s 2024 election victory. Director James Cameron has plans for a permanent move to New Zealand, motivated by his criticism of Trump. Ellen DeGeneres stated that Trump’s election led her and wife Portia de Rossi to make their stay in the UK permanent. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis.” DeGeneres explained.
O’Donnell returned briefly to the U.S. for a stint on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” before focusing on her new residency in Ireland. During the show, she referred to Trump as “Mango Mussolini.” O’Donnell expressed her decision by citing a desire “to get out” of America, choosing Ireland as a refuge.
These celebrity relocations and threats have caught the eye of Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff. He stated that celebrity threats to leave often garner skepticism, but Garfunkel’s expression of discontent carries weight due to his long-standing presence in American music. “He’s looking at the country he has lived in his entire life and saying, essentially, ‘I don’t recognize our role in the world anymore,’” Shroff noted.
Shroff believes Garfunkel’s comments are more a political statement than a firm plan to leave, reflecting prevalent unease over America’s current direction. “People can disagree with his politics, but that kind of unease is hardly unique to Art Garfunkel,” Shroff added.
