The Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe is unveiling a captivating seasonal exhibit that transforms the garden landscape through mesmerizing iridescent bubbles. “Evanescent,” part of the “Shimmering Summer” exhibit, will be open to the public from June 6 to September 20.
Visitors can explore large-scale bubble sculptures that embody the fleeting nature of life. Australian art duo Atelier Sisu designed the installation to enhance visitor experiences across the garden’s 385 acres. Jodi Zombolo from the Chicago Botanic Garden highlights the exhibit’s interactive nature, emphasizing its appeal to all ages.
Zombolo shared that this project examines how art interacts with nature. “These sculptures are engaging for everyone,” she said, noting the first U.S. feature of Sydney-based Atelier Sisu, known for their abstract installations of light and sound.
Atelier Sisu’s inspiration for “Evanescent” began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibit serves as a reminder of life’s transience, akin to bubbles that inspire awe before vanishing into the air. The garden will host weekend events throughout the summer, including bubble performances, glass blowing, hula-hoop art, and live music.
Opening weekend activities on June 6 and 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Festival Field, are included with admission. A Garden View Cafe pop-up will offer snacks and beverages like “bubble skewers” and bubble tea.
Summer events will continue with concerts on the Esplanade every Monday and Wednesday evening, game nights each Thursday beginning June 18, and the Heirloom Tomato Fest in August.
Public hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for members. Tickets range from $22.95 to $24.95 for adults and $14.95 to $16.95 for children aged 3-12. Entry is free for children under 2.
Zombolo expressed excitement for the exhibit’s progress, highlighting its extensive reach at multiple garden locations. The installations enhance nature appreciation and showcase the garden’s diverse beauty.
