Indonesian authorities recently arrested two Russian nationals for allegedly smuggling drugs into Bali. The arrest followed a high-speed car chase that endangered several pedestrians on the island. A 52-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man faced charges after trying to transport nearly eight kilograms (18 pounds) of hashish from Thailand, as confirmed by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN).
BNN Chief Suyudi Ario Seto stated, “We have seized the evidence, 7.8 kilograms of hashish.” The woman, identified by her initials “KK,” landed at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport. She proceeded to Bali in a rented car, intending to meet the man at a seaport that Friday.
The male suspect, referred to by his initials “SK,” met the woman and later abandoned her and the suitcase at an undisclosed location. His attempt to escape led officials to pursue him. They reported that he drove recklessly at high speed, injuring several residents, until authorities managed to apprehend him. Both individuals were detained on Friday, though additional details remain undisclosed. BNN shared images of the suspects and the suitcase containing the alleged drugs.
An investigation is ongoing to determine if they belong to a larger syndicate. Indonesia enforces strict anti-drug laws, including the death penalty for traffickers. However, there has been a moratorium on executions for several years. Numerous traffickers remain on death row, with the last execution in 2016 involving one Indonesian and three Nigerians convicted of drug offenses.
In recent years, Indonesia has shown leniency in certain cases. In December 2024, it removed Mary Jane Veloso from death row, allowing her return to the Philippines. The remaining members of the “Bali Nine” were also sent back to Australia from serving extensive prison terms. Additionally, in March, two British men received sentences of nine and eleven years for cocaine smuggling into Bali. Last August, a Peruvian woman faced arrest in Bali for allegedly smuggling cocaine through a sex toy, concealing drugs in her undergarments.
