Jalen Hurts’ Health Concerns Highlight Eagles’ Player Safety Approach

On Monday, reports indicated that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts might miss the rest of the current season. Doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs, leading to this development.

Former NFL player and CBS Sports analyst Leger Douzable expressed concerns about the Eagles’ management of Hurts’ health issue. He questioned how the organization handled Hurts and how potential future players would perceive the team’s priorities.

Player Safety Concerns

Douzable’s main concern was player safety. He suggested that other players might doubt the Eagles’ commitment to their well-being when deciding whether to join the team. He remarked, “If you’re treating a player who’s delivered a Super Bowl like this, how will you treat new arrivals?”

Further issues arose when ESPN reported that Hurts initially had a superficial blood clot in his calf. This diagnosis came before the team’s game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the diagnosis, the Eagles’ medical staff cleared him to play.

Subsequent testing showed the clot had shifted, leading to Hurts sitting out the October 18 game against the Panthers. His condition was diagnosed as deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli.

Response from the Eagles

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni defended the team’s medical staff, stating that player health remains a top priority. Yet, Douzable criticized the decision to allow Hurts to play after the initial diagnosis. He argued that the team should have prioritized Hurts’ safety above all.

“Someone should have intervened and said, ‘Jalen, we love your competitive spirit, but we cannot risk your health,'” Douzable insisted.

Douzable clarified that his criticism depended on the accuracy of current reports. His comments could pose challenging questions for the Eagles’ decision-makers regarding their treatment of Hurts and the implications for other players.
