Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels recently faced significant backlash after sending a cease-and-desist letter to LSU concerning the use of his name, image, and likeness. Daniels objected to LSU’s decision to allow cornerback DJ Pickett to wear his number 5, a number Daniels had worn during his time with the Tigers.
Daniels shared a statement on Instagram explaining his decision to file the letter, but the move resulted in widespread trolling on social media. Many users, including organizations like the New York Mets and StubHub, mocked Daniels’ request for respect by making humorous posts referencing the number 5. StubHub, for example, joked about not offering tickets in groups of 5 “out of respect for Jayden Daniels.”
Daniels: “I posted the statement on Instagram and said everything I needed to say. So, appreciate y’all.”
Despite the commotion, Daniels remained unresponsive to the media, reiterating his previous statement at a press conference following a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens.
While the controversy surrounding the letter is less than ideal as Daniels prepares for the upcoming NFL season, he appears focused and composed. Daniels emphasized his dedication to training camp and his gratitude for his time at LSU, where he won a Heisman Trophy before moving to the NFL.
In his statement, Daniels mentioned, “I have been locked in on training camp and that’s been my number one focus. I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU and I’m proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there.” He expressed hope that the issues with LSU could be resolved privately and affirmed his commitment to the Commanders.
Daniels is eager to stay healthy and contribute to the Commanders’ success in the 2026 NFL season, following an injury-plagued sophomore campaign. He previously earned accolades as the Offensive Rookie of the Year, leading his team to the NFC Championship Game in 2024. However, injuries limited him to seven games last season, hindering the Commanders’ playoff chances.
