Maine’s Tight Senate Race: Collins and Jackson Neck and Neck

Maine’s Senate race remains tightly contested, with Republican Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson locked in a tie. Despite the state’s Democratic-leaning tendencies, Collins is maintaining significant support. This is partly due to her appeal to Maine Democrats and voters focusing more on state issues rather than national trends.

Collins benefits from perceptions that she can secure more federal funds for Maine. Notably, she attracts one in five voters who disapprove of Trump, surpassing the support Republican congressional candidates receive nationwide.

Conversely, Jackson’s support stems from those who see Collins as too aligned with President Trump, oppose tariffs, seek Democratic control of the Senate, and prioritize change. With 10% of voters undecided, either candidate could gain a decisive advantage.

Even when Jackson’s policies are seen as financially beneficial, Collins still garners support from nearly one in five of those voters. Although many in Maine feel Trump’s policies have harmed the economy, Collins’ longstanding service remains a strength. Her appeal endures among voters with a history of backing her.

Jackson faces challenges from the primary season fallout, with four in 10 Democrats and most independents preferring an alternative candidate. He trails Democrats’ gubernatorial nominee Hannah Pingree, whose lead aligns more closely with the state’s partisan preference. Some voters are opting for Collins while supporting Pingree, reflecting a desire for ticket-splitting.

This analysis is based on a CBS News/YouGov survey with 1,114 registered voters in Maine, conducted from September 23 to October 1, 2026. The data considers variables like gender, age, race, education, and the 2024 presidential vote, with a margin of error of ± 4.7 points.
