Marriott Theatre’s Staging of ‘A Little Night Music’

Marriott Theatre offers an impressive staging of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s “A Little Night Music,” directed by Nick Bowling. This production stands out as one of the most sophisticated performances recently seen in Chicagoland’s suburban musical theater.

The production, featuring exceptional talent from Chicago and New York, echoes the ambitious days of previous Sondheim stagings, like those by Gary Griffin at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Fans of Sondheim are sure to find the journey to suburban Lincolnshire worthwhile.

Director Nick Bowling, known for his work in “The History Boys” at TimeLine Theatre, shines here with his ability to inject life, complexity, and emotion into Sondheim’s complex musical. The show explores themes similar to a “theme and variations,” filled with human desire and emotional depth.

The cast is notably strong. Alexandra Silber stars as Desirée, showcasing a unique vocal style that brings depth to her character. Her performance reflects the core paradoxes in Sondheim’s work, as she expresses a mix of acceptance and desperation. Desirée, often portrayed with cliches, is given a vulnerability and dynamism through Silber’s performance.

Other standout performances include Addie Morales as Anne, bringing a fresh voice to the role of the young ingenue. Andrew Samonsky portrays Fredrik with the right blend of sadness and ordinariness. Carmen Roman plays Madame Armfeldt with her insightful and sardonically wise take on the narrative.

Additional noteworthy roles include Madison Uphoff’s portrayal of Petra, rich in energy and introspection, and Veronica Garza as Charlotte, whose performance of “Every Day a Little Death” is notably moving.

Ryan T. Nelson’s musical direction complements the outstanding balance and tone achieved throughout the performance. The show takes full advantage of the in-the-round staging, enhancing the audience’s connection with the story. Regina Garcia’s simple set design and Sally Dolembo’s evolving costumes effectively convey the early 20th-century milieu.

Despite some minor overplaying issues, the entire performance remains exquisite. It’s a testament to Sondheim’s musicals, offering insights into human nature and a chance for actors to explore nuanced roles.

“A Little Night Music” runs until August 9 at Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire. Tickets are available for $78-$97 by calling 847-634-0200 or visiting marriotttheatre.com.
