Terri Bresnahan is gearing up for the start of the new academic year. She attended meetings on Tuesday afternoon, preparing for the students’ return on Aug. 26. Ensuring that resources and materials are ready, summer projects finished, and school buildings clean are some of her main tasks before the school year begins.
Bresnahan commenced her 31st year in public education last month as the superintendent at Oak Park Elementary School District 97. This district includes eight elementary schools as well as Brooks Middle School and Julian Middle School. Her four-year contract began on July 1, following its approval in February. She brings previous experience as a superintendent, coming from Berkeley School District 87, where she served for 11 years.
Bresnahan is focused on equity in a community she sees as committed to providing opportunities to all students. “Oak Park is known for championing equity,” she stated. School Board President Cheree Moore praised Bresnahan, saying, “Dr. Bresnahan brings deep experience leading diverse school communities with integrity and care.” The board believes she is the right person to advance District 97.
Bresnahan is drawn to Oak Park’s commitment to education and community collaboration. Her decision to join Oak Park aligns with her view of public education under national scrutiny. Moore added that Bresnahan displayed the judgment and leadership the community sought during the selection process.
Bresnahan’s passion for education dates back to her upbringing. Raised by a single mother who worked multiple jobs, she benefited from school programs like free lunches. “Having that experience helped me choose a career where I could give back,” Bresnahan reflected.
She plans to enhance school culture through initiatives like “responsive classrooms” to support positive classroom management. Though new to Oak Park, Bresnahan aims to understand how the district can improve and make an impact. Her goal is to be accessible and committed to serving all students.
“Our community wants a leader who will be present and committed,” Moore noted. “Dr. Bresnahan has the experience to build relationships and strengthen the work already progressing in District 97.”
