New York City has added a new area code to accommodate its growing population. The city, with its millions of residents, frequently faces a shortage of available phone numbers. The latest number, 465, will serve as the eighth area code for the city and is set to be used in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Marble Hill section of Manhattan.
This marks the first new area code introduced in New York City since 2017. The city’s original area code, 212, was launched in 1947, becoming a symbol of Old New York and widely regarded as the most prestigious. Artist Azealia Banks referenced the significance of this code in her popular song titled “212.”
Each area code in the city represents different regions, creating a unique identity for its neighborhoods. With the introduction of 465, residents of the specified areas will soon find this new number in use. Additionally, the importance of area codes in defining one’s identity is humorously highlighted in pop culture, notably in the “Sex and the City” movie, where the character Carrie Bradshaw experiences a crisis when switching from 917 to 347.
New Yorkers embrace their area codes as an integral part of their identity, with the city’s diversity reflected in these numbers. The addition of the 465 area code represents the ongoing adaptation to the city’s growing needs.
