New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced pressure to distance himself from Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), due to allegations about Gordillo’s financial conduct. Critics have highlighted a contrast between Gordillo’s financial dealings and the socialist values he promotes.
Gordillo is accused of failing to pay $5,000 in rent for a Crown Heights apartment while his family’s townhouse underwent $1.4 million renovations. The apartment rent was reported to be $2,500 per month. Gordillo’s family purchased the Bed-Stuy townhouse for $935,000 in 2019.
Mayor Mamdani, speaking on the issue, emphasized the value of working towards a more affordable and fair city. He refused to condemn Gordillo directly, saying he welcomes anyone committed to making New York inclusive.
The Democratic Socialists of America have become the Double Standards of America—demanding transparency, fairness, and accountability from everyone else while ignoring serious questions about one of their own,said Rev. Kevin McCall, who assists tenants in New York City Housing Authority complexes.
Rev. McCall urged DSA leaders to address questions regarding Gordillo’s credibility as a representative of the working class. Gordillo’s apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was terminated due to lack of participation. Despite this, he reportedly secured a $95,000 annual salary from NYC-DSA without disclosing his apprenticeship termination.
Further complications arose when the Bed-Stuy renovation faced a stop-work order due to permit issues, as nonunion contractors were involved. These actions undermine Gordillo’s portrayal as a union-supporting advocate for workers.
As the housing court case continues, Mamdani refrains from public criticism of Gordillo, keeping a focus on his broader goals for the city.
