New York Rangers Secure 5-1 Victory Against Tampa Bay Lightning

The New York Rangers rebounded effectively after a tough 3-0 defeat to the Boston Bruins, clinching a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. This performance demonstrated a robust team effort.

Star goaltender Igor Shesterkin stood out with an impressive display in goal, saving 23 of 24 shots during the game. His remarkable contribution didn’t stop there.

In the third period, at 17:26, Shesterkin scored a rare goalie goal by seizing a turnover opportunity. He launched the puck from the Rangers’ crease into the Lightning’s unguarded net, securing a 5-1 lead for the team.

This marks the first goalie goal in Shesterkin’s NHL career and a historic moment for the Rangers. He became the first goalie in the franchise’s history to score. Shesterkin is now the 18th goaltender in NHL history to accomplish this feat. The last goalie to score in the NHL was New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin, on March 1, 2025, against the Nashville Predators.

Shesterkin’s early season performance is promising. He boasts a .935 save percentage and a 1.51 goals-against average in his first two appearances. This achievement could set a strong tone for the rest of his season.
