Reports suggest that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are considering returning to the United Kingdom. According to royal commentator Neil Sean, the move comes as Harry wishes to mend his fractured relationship with King Charles III, after spending six years in California. This decision could have significant implications for the royal family’s future dynamics.
The couple, once vocal critics of royal life and the British press, plan to relocate to a private residence just outside of London this month. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are expected to start attending a British school in September, as reported by the BBC. King Charles III is reportedly aware of their plans and looks forward to more interaction with his grandchildren. However, this move does not signal a return to their roles as working royals.
In their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry and Meghan addressed their reasons for leaving the royal family, including a claim that Harry felt ‘trapped’ and unable to leave without Meghan’s support. He described his relationship with his family as strained and noted feeling disappointed by his father, sharing that he and Prince William are on ‘different paths.’
I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped.–Prince Harry during the Oprah interview.
Meghan Markle also made significant allegations about the royal family’s internal discussions on race, specifically concerning the skin color of their son Archie. The claim intensified tensions, with Meghan asserting that it was the palace, not them, who decided against granting Archie a royal title or security. Furthermore, Meghan mentioned a stark difference in how she and Princess Kate were treated by the press, attributing parts of the scrutiny she faced to racism.
The issue of mental health was another somber revelation during the interview. Meghan disclosed experiencing suicidal thoughts due to relentless media scrutiny, a confession that deeply affected Prince Harry. He has often drawn parallels between the media’s treatment of Meghan and that of his late mother, Princess Diana.
Financial difficulties also emerged as a concern. After stepping back from royal duties, Harry revealed that the royal family cut him off financially in early 2020. He relied on his inheritance from Princess Diana for security costs.
The couple’s relationship with the palace media has been fraught. Harry criticized the way stories were manipulated or leaked within the establishment, calling the system within the royal family a ‘dirty game.’ This sentiment was echoed in their Netflix documentary, where they described the stress of being under constant public scrutiny.
A significant legal battle unfolded as Harry fought for police protection in the UK, highlighting his concerns about family safety. His bid to personally finance security was rejected by the UK Home Office, emphasizing that police protection could not be purchased by private individuals.
The potential return to the UK comes at a complex time, with Harry expressing a desire for reconciliation with his family, despite previous declarations that he could no longer envisage returning due to security concerns. This ongoing saga highlights the challenges and complexities faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in balancing personal safety, family relations, and public duties.
