Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York shared her decision to freeze her eggs. She made this known in a series of Instagram Story videos. This decision gives her more control over her future, and she used this opportunity to critique the Trump administration’s policies on women’s reproductive health.
Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the progressive “Squad,” shared these videos on Saturday. She conveyed that she had been contemplating and saving for the procedure for years. Her aim in being open about this process is to help women learn about reproductive health and family-planning choices.
“I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs,” Ocasio-Cortez announced in the Instagram stories.
Ocasio-Cortez, who began her tenure in Congress at 28, noted that serving in public office at a young age comes with unique challenges, such as having to make significant life decisions publicly. She compared this to the private nature of similar decisions for most people.
In her videos, the congresswoman also shared behind-the-scenes footage of her egg-freezing process. Her goal is to bring normalization to discussions around fertility and other aspects of women’s health that she believes don’t get enough attention.
Ocasio-Cortez emphasizes the need to show women leading full lives with a range of choices. She characterized her decision to freeze her eggs as a way to gain more personal control. She acknowledged that this procedure is a privilege due to its technological and financial demands, which have recently become more accessible.
She acknowledged the “political tax” that might come with publicizing her choice. Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the scrutiny faced by female politicians regarding personal life choices compared to their male counterparts. She criticized the Trump administration for what she sees as a hostile stance towards women’s reproductive rights.
“In the political context we are in,” she said, “an administration is dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and taking our choices away.”
The announcement drew reactions on social media, including criticism from Turning Point USA’s Andrew Kolvet. He argued that the decision reflects a broader progressive message that prioritizes careers over starting families.
Ocasio-Cortez, engaged to Riley Roberts since May 2022, has planned to share more of her egg-freezing journey, showing the hormone injections necessary before retrieving the eggs. She intends to demonstrate her resilience, even filming herself administering medications before TV appearances.
