Retired Police Chief Steps Up During Midair Crisis on United Flight

Retired Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara faced an unexpected situation during a routine flight. Traveling from Newark to Fort Lauderdale on United Flight 1364, the calm turned to chaos 35,000 feet in the air. O’Hara, alongside two off-duty Bergen County sheriff’s deputies, intervened when a passenger became unruly.

An Unexpected Midair Crisis

O’Hara was with his wife when a passenger’s behavior started disrupting the peace. The individual repeatedly disturbed flight attendants, resisted staying seated, and displayed erratic actions. For nearly 45 minutes, crew members remained composed as they attempted to manage the situation.

Flight attendants initially denied the passenger’s requests for more alcohol. This refusal led to increased agitation, verbal abuse, and threats from the passenger. Eventually, the situation escalated; the individual lunged towards crew members.

Intervention by Law Enforcement Officers

With the situation turning physical, O’Hara and two sheriff’s deputies acted swiftly. The officers managed to restrain the passenger using plastic flex cuffs, ensuring the safety of everyone onboard before the aircraft safely landed.

The deputies’ identities were later revealed to O’Hara. United Airlines confirmed the incident, highlighting that local law enforcement met the flight after its arrival in Fort Lauderdale.

Professionalism in Handling the Situation

While video footage of the incident circulated online, O’Hara noted that most clips did not depict the lengthy efforts by the crew to resolve the situation peacefully. He praised the professionalism and dedication of the flight attendants.

O’Hara reflected on the potential dangers of such midair confrontations. The confined space of an aircraft adds complexity to managing aggressive behavior.

Support and Reflection

O’Hara’s wife, also involved in law enforcement, was nearby during the ordeal. She acknowledged her husband’s actions publicly, emphasizing the importance of readiness to assist when necessary.

Reflecting on the incident, O’Hara urged Americans not to be passive observers in dangerous situations. He recalled the lessons from September 11, stressing the duty of all citizens to act when necessary to prevent violence.

Calls for Better Preparedness

O’Hara advised airlines to ensure that restraints are accessible and that crew members receive training in their use. Such measures can help maintain safety if passengers become violent.

As of Thursday afternoon, the authorities had not released further information about the unruly passenger or announced charges. Inquiries to the Broward Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Aviation Administration are ongoing.
