President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche, confronts fresh scrutiny due to a lawsuit filed by New Mexico. The lawsuit accuses the Justice Department of withholding crucial records related to Jeffrey Epstein’s activities at Zorro Ranch near Santa Fe. Acting Attorney General Blanche, alongside the DOJ, is named as a defendant in this legal battle.
As Blanche’s nomination progresses through the U.S. Senate, concerns regarding the DOJ’s management of Epstein-related documents have intensified. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, representing the Democratic Party, asserts that federal authorities have hampered the state’s probe into potential crimes connected to Epstein’s estate in New Mexico.
DOJ Defends Its Position
The Justice Department has dismissed the allegations, citing court orders that protect victim-identifying information. The DOJ states, “Federal court orders prohibit the disclosure of victim-identifying information carte blanche, and New Mexico has provided no lawful basis to justify such sweeping disclosures.” They express readiness to assist with New Mexico’s investigation but insist their cooperation aligns with legal requirements and binding court orders.

The complaint highlights numerous requests for information allegedly ignored, denied, or delayed by federal officials. In 2019, Torrez’s office claims federal authorities agreed to collaborate with state investigators post the federal Epstein inquiry, yet full cooperation fell short. State documents publicly mention Zorro Ranch and New Mexico thousands of times.
New Mexico seeks records depicting alleged abuse at the ranch, property-connected associates, and other documents crucial for their ongoing investigation. AG Torrez emphasizes the state’s duty to protect survivors and investigate local crimes for accountability.
“We asked the Department of Justice to cooperate by providing access to records that may be critical to identifying victims, witnesses, and additional criminal conduct at Zorro Ranch. Their delay is actively hurting our criminal investigation and delaying justice Epstein survivors deserve,” Torrez stated.
