Republican Gains in New York: A Closer Look
Recent polling data reveals that Republican Bruce Blakeman is narrowing the gap with Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the race for New York governor. This comes as a surprise given New York’s reputation as a stronghold for Democrats, although recent cycles have shown shrinking margins for the party. In 2020, former Vice President Kamala Harris won New York by under 13 points, a decrease from former President Joe Biden’s 23-point win. Hochul’s own election in 2022 was closer than expected, with a victory margin of around six points over Lee Zeldin.
These factors contribute to the Republicans’ belief that this year’s gubernatorial race is a competitive one. The GOP is also attempting to associate Hochul with progressive lawmakers elected in New York City, many of whom are democratic socialists.
Hochul’s Lead Narrows
According to a Siena University poll conducted from August 3-6, 2026, Hochul held a 10-point lead over Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Hochul’s support is at 49 percent, compared to Blakeman’s 39 percent, representing narrowing margins from previous polls. The poll had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
Democrats have highlighted Hochul’s increased popularity since her last election and cited a favorable national climate due to factors like declining approval for Donald Trump.
Broader Democratic Performance
Other Democratic candidates are performing better in the polls. Attorney General Letitia James leads her Republican opponent Saritha Komatireddy by 18 points, while State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli is ahead of Republican Joseph Hernandez by 23 points.
Boris Heersink of Fordham University notes Hochul’s lead, although reduced, is still comfortable in a largely Democratic state. Joseph Viteritti from Hunter College points out that Blakeman is gaining recognition among voters.
Response and Other Polls
“All of the polls we have seen in the last two months have us virtually tied with Kathy Hochul. This poll is always off and continues to be off. We know and she knows this race is neck and neck.” — Bruce Blakeman
Other polls show varying leads for Hochul. A co/efficient poll from June 2026 showed Hochul leading by 6 points, whereas an Echelon Insights poll from March showed a 15-point lead. Prediction markets favor Hochul’s victory at a 94 percent probability.
Primary Concerns and Endorsements
Hochul faced potential vulnerability in a Democratic primary, although Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado eventually withdrew his challenge. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed Hochul, praising her transformative leadership style.
Joseph Viteritti remarks that Hochul’s relationship with Mamdani could prevent defections within the left-wing faction.
Impact of Progressives in NYC
New York’s Democratic primaries saw several progressive victories. Republican efforts are focused on tying Hochul to these progressive candidates, hoping it affects moderate voters.
Boris Heersink casts doubt on progressive victories damaging Democrats statewide, suggesting midterm elections will primarily revolve around attitudes toward the Trump administration.
Is New York Shifting to Purple?
Democrats’ margins have noticeably decreased in New York, and Republicans have gained traction among Latino and Asian voters in outer boroughs. This election could indicate whether Republicans continue to progress or if Democrats regain strength.
Despite the shrinking margins, Democrats still dominate in voter registration compared to Republicans in New York.
