The State of Georgia Bulldogs Football in the NIL Era

When you live and breathe college football, various narratives emerge about the sport, some plausible and others less so. A recent narrative questions the dominance of the Georgia Bulldogs since the introduction of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws. Critics claim that Georgia has lost its competitive edge since NIL went into effect. But the Bulldogs’ recent performance tells a different story.

Georgia’s Performance Post-NIL

The NIL policy came into play on July 1, 2021. Georgia quickly demonstrated its resilience, winning consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Georgia maintained its status as a top contender, holding the No. 1 rank through most of the season before narrowly missing the College Football Playoff after a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship. Despite this, they finished with a strong 13-1 record after defeating Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

The 2024 season saw Georgia secure 11 wins, another SEC Championship, and victories against several Playoff contenders. In 2025, they clinched the conference title once more, ending the season 12-2 after a close loss to Ole Miss in the quarterfinals. A record of 65-7 with two national titles and three SEC championships hardly suggests a program in decline.

Recruiting and Talent Acquisition

NIL’s influence on recruitment has also faced scrutiny. However, Georgia’s recruiting performance has contradicted these concerns. Starting with the 2022 recruiting cycle, Georgia’s class rankings have been impressive: third (2022), second (2023), first (2024), second (2025), and sixth (2026) according to 247Sports composite rankings. Georgia has continued to acquire top-tier talent, dismissing claims that NIL has leveled the playing field against them.

While the 2026 recruiting class ranks 30th, this snapshot is misleading. Georgia has commitments from just eight players so far, two of whom are five-star prospects. When the recruitment cycle concludes, Georgia is expected to be among the top five once more.

Impact of Transfer Portal

The transfer portal has added complexity to recruitment, affecting how teams manage top talents. The expectation for players to wait for game time has diminished. However, Georgia remains a powerhouse, consistently fielding one of the most skilled teams in the nation.

Long-term Outlook

Georgia’s recent seasons without a national championship victory do not signify a decline. In the context of competitive college football, winning a national title every year is unrealistic. Georgia’s strong presence in high-stakes matches indicates a team poised for continued success.

Although personal biases may color opinions, objective analysis shows Georgia is still a formidable force. Even as a Florida Gator fan, acknowledging the Bulldogs’ achievements is essential. If a real decline occurs, it will be apparent, but for now, Georgia’s prospects remain bright.
