Tim Allen Reflects on Fatherhood and Sobriety

Tim Allen recently shared his candid thoughts on fatherhood, regrets, and the impact of his 30-year sobriety. In an interview with US Weekly, he discussed how he never initially wanted to be a father and described his journey as a “work in progress.”

“I never really wanted to be a dad,” Allen admitted. “I joke about it on stage; I’ve just never been a real fan of children.” He further explained that the experience of raising children involves unforeseen challenges, much like obtaining a driver’s license or passport.

[…] there’s nothing about [raising] children. It was a work in progress.

Allen’s family includes two daughters: Katherine Allen from his first marriage to Laura Deibel and Elizabeth Allen-Dick with his current wife, Jane Hajduk. Allen shared that his wife Jane once wished for more children, stating, “because you learn on the first two.”

The actor reflected on his upbringing in a family with seven brothers and two sisters. Raising daughters presented new challenges in his view of building strong women. His focus lay more on teaching life skills like finances rather than engaging in topics such as fashion and gossip.

The girl stuff I have little interest in—clothing, looks, gossip, and all that—[I focused on] learning finances, learning how to take care of yourself, and that works for boys and girls.

Allen acknowledged the unique connection between father and daughter. “We communicate on a different level,” he said, noting his older daughter’s acknowledgment of his past advice.

Tim Allen is vocal about his sobriety and its effects on his relationship with his daughters. He mentioned making amends with his older daughter, Katherine, for not being sober during parts of her upbringing. With his younger daughter, he noted the difference his sobriety brought to their relationship.

She never knew any of that guy. I’ve thought about it many times, and I’ve talked to Kate, and she doesn’t hold it against me.

Reflecting on his early years, Allen revisited his past struggles, including time spent in prison. He shared that reading about successful individuals during incarceration motivated him to change his life and avoid repeating mistakes that had previously humiliated him and those close to him.
