The recent passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, aged 71, due to aortic dissection, has sparked tributes from across Washington. Discussions about his replacement have quickly commenced, with a focus on a potential successor—his sister, Darline Graham Nordone.
Former President Donald Trump has suggested Nordone to fill the vacant Senate seat. Her name emerged soon after her brother’s death. Both Trump and Senator Tim Scott advocate for her appointment. Sources indicated that Scott has already consulted with her about completing Graham’s term.
Trump urged South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint Nordone. Trump communicated on Truth Social, referring to Graham’s sister as a “wonderful” choice to temporarily serve in his place. Governor McMaster is expected to announce his decision soon, with Scott likely in attendance.
If Nordone is appointed, it would be a temporary arrangement. The process for selecting a long-term successor involves private negotiations. The candidates will vie for the GOP nomination, with the filing deadline set for July 21 and a special primary scheduled for August 11. The opportunity to serve in the Senate is seen by many in South Carolina as significant and rare.
Unlike her late brother, Nordone lacks experience in public office. Her professional background includes vocational rehabilitation work, focusing on aiding those with disabilities in South Carolina. Nordone revealed her current emotional state to the New York Post, expressing devastation after Trump’s announcement.
Graham and Nordone shared a strong bond. After losing their parents within a short span, Graham, in his twenties, assumed the role of her legal guardian. He became both a father and brother figure to her. Graham spoke fondly of her accomplishments, highlighting them as a significant aspect of his life.
In a reflection on their relationship, Nordone detailed Graham’s influence on her life. His decision to enlist in the Air Force enabled her access to military benefits that supported her education. In interviews, she described him as fulfilling multiple family roles and credited him for her educational achievements.
Nordone actively participated in Graham’s electoral campaigns, consistently supporting him throughout his political career. She often shared how he aided in her upbringing and never failed in his responsibilities toward her.
