The United Kingdom announced the deployment of RAF Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia. This measure aims to defend against missile and drone attacks from the Iranian-supported Houthi rebels.
U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting stated on Tuesday that these aircraft will solely serve a defensive purpose; they will not engage in offensive operations against the Houthis. Along with the jets, the U.K. is also dispatching military advisers and a RAF A400M transport aircraft. This transport aircraft will facilitate moving defense equipment within the kingdom.
The announcement follows recent claims by the Houthis of two attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on October 10 and 11. These attacks resulted in 13 fatalities and injured 308 individuals. The Houthis are involved in a civil conflict with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which receives support from Riyadh.
Further updates on this story are anticipated as more information becomes available.
