Wisconsin Gubernatorial Candidate Francesca Hong Discusses Lack of Support from Prominent Progressives

Francesca Hong, a Democratic socialist candidate in the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary, addressed questions on Monday concerning the absence of endorsements from notable progressives like U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. These key figures, known for their influence within progressive circles, did not endorse Hong in the run-up to Tuesday’s primary.

Hong expressed respect for both politicians, acknowledging their efforts to secure Democratic victories in the upcoming midterm elections. She noted that the dynamics of a gubernatorial race differ from federal elections, suggesting that this could explain the lack of endorsement. “I look forward to conversations with them about that too,” Hong remarked when discussing their focus on congressional gains.

During a discussion on ABC’s “This Week,” hosted by Jonathan Karl, Ocasio-Cortez was asked about her position on endorsing Hong. She clarified her non-involvement in Hong’s race, citing her current focus on reclaiming control of Congress and the Senate for the Democrats as her main priorities.

Ocasio-Cortez addressed past remarks made by Hong, stating that she believes Hong has clarified her current positions to voters and moved on from earlier statements. “What’s important is that we have to assess what a candidate is saying now,” Ocasio-Cortez noted, emphasizing the need to focus on present stances over historical comments.

Hong responded to this dialogue by highlighting the growing awareness of economic issues faced by the working class. She communicated her commitment to policies intended to benefit this demographic, such as taxing the ultra-rich, introducing a moratorium on data centers, raising wages, advocating for universal childcare, and ensuring proper funding for public schools.

The competitive Democratic gubernatorial primary in Wisconsin includes other candidates like Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, state Sen. Kelda Roys, and former Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan. The outcome of this primary will be a key factor in the upcoming election period.
