2026 Midterms Set to Break Spending Records

The 2026 midterm elections are shaping up to be the most costly in history. This surge is driven by enthusiasm for Democratic candidates and extensive contributions from Republican megadonors, especially Elon Musk. Since the start of 2025, over $15 billion has been raised, with half spent so far.

Ad spending for House and Senate races has exceeded $4 billion. Several hundred million more are slated for the final two weeks of the elections. The Republican Party, which won the White House and a narrow majority in 2024, faces challenges. The public’s dissatisfaction with President Trump’s agenda, an unpopular war in Iran, and rising fuel costs are influencing voter sentiment.

Democratic Advances in Senate Races

Notable in this election cycle is the competitiveness of numerous U.S. Senate races. Often, Democratic or independent candidates have outperformed their Republican rivals in fundraising. In 27 of 35 Senate races on the ballot, Democrats have raised more from July to September. In the 13 most competitive races, they enjoy almost a 5-to-1 fundraising advantage.

In Texas, Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico’s campaign reported about $60 million in third-quarter contributions. This sets a record for a Senate campaign in the lead-up to the election. Similarly, other Democrats in historically Republican states have raised significant amounts. In Kansas, candidate Adam Hamilton accumulated nearly $10 million, far outpacing incumbent Senator Roger Marshall.

House Incumbents Facing Fundraising Disadvantages

The upcoming Congress is already preparing for numerous departures. Many incumbents could face defeat in November. A strong anti-incumbency sentiment continues from the primaries into fundraising activities.

In the last quarter, 50 sitting House members, primarily Republicans, were outraised. Notably, only one of the 17 vulnerable Republicans dubbed as “NRCC Patriots” raised more than their opponent. On the Democratic side, most candidates targeted for “Red to Blue” flips have managed to outpace their rivals financially.

Elon Musk’s Significant Contributions

Elon Musk’s financial input plays a crucial role in Republican campaigns, particularly in Texas. Recently, Musk contributed $158 million to the Republican Senate Leadership Fund, among other substantial donations. His funding significantly backs efforts to maintain a Republican hold in Congress. In Texas, Musk’s contributions exceed the combined fundraising of the candidates involved in the Senate race.

Continuous and Extensive Ad Spending

Significant advertising spending indicates a heated political landscape. From now through Election Day, at least $700 million in ad reservations are set. Most of this targets races considered toss-ups or Republican-leaning.

Recent days have seen Republican ad spending surge in the Kansas Senate race and House seats across several states. Conversely, spending has decreased in some races now favoring Democrats. Meanwhile, Democrats intensify ad spending in competitive Senate races, aiming to capitalize on their lead.

The campaign finance deadline of October 15 marked a major milestone. However, major contributions and outside spending will be reported swiftly up to Election Day.
