The Auburn Tigers recently celebrated a significant victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 7. Yet, shortly after, head coach Alex Golesh made a challenging decision regarding the team’s defensive lineup. The Tigers have parted ways with their standout linebacker, Xavier Atkins.
Atkins had an impressive sophomore season with nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss, leading the SEC in the latter. His performance earned him a spot on the First Team All-SEC. In the current season, after five games, he was tied for the team’s lead in sacks and ranked as the second leading tackler.
Before facing Georgia, Golesh announced Atkins would miss the game but did not provide details. The situation escalated, leading to Auburn dismissing Atkins from the program, as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The reasons for his dismissal remain unclear. Golesh mentioned on Monday that the team was still “working through” the issues related to Atkins’ absence from the Week 7 game.
Despite this setback, Auburn aims to maintain their momentum and focus on their upcoming challenge against the No. 18 ranked LSU Tigers. They return to their home field on Saturday, October 24, for this important matchup.
