AOC Endorses Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan Senate Primary

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced her backing of Abdul El-Sayed for the Michigan Democratic Senate primary. This endorsement, initially reported by The New York Times, is a significant move from the progressive congresswoman during the midterm elections.

Ocasio-Cortez noted El-Sayed’s campaign strength, emphasizing his ability to unite a winning coalition through an agenda targeting working-class individuals. El-Sayed faces Rep. Haley Stevens and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow in the upcoming three-way primary. The victor will compete in November’s crucial battleground race.

While McMorrow’s campaign did not provide immediate commentary, Stevens’ team chose not to comment. This marks the first Senate primary where Ocasio-Cortez has made an endorsement, having refrained from pushing candidates in other states.

El-Sayed, portraying himself as the most progressive candidate, has gained momentum. In a statement, he praised Ocasio-Cortez for exemplifying strong leadership and expressed gratitude for her endorsement, rallying supporters with “Onward to victory.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement contrasts with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s support for Stevens. Both Stevens and McMorrow have received endorsements from various high-profile figures and organizations, including prominent senators and media editorial boards.

The framing of El-Sayed as the most electable by Ocasio-Cortez sparks debate among Democrats on optimal candidates for victory. Stevens’ supporters advocate for her appeal to swing voters through moderate policies, while McMorrow highlights her ability to attract both party wings.

The Michigan Senate race remains vital for Democrats aiming to regain control. The state, a former win for President Biden, saw a shift with Trump’s victory in 2024. As Sen. Gary Peters prepares to retire, the Democratic primary winner is likely to face Republican Mike Rogers. Rogers narrowly lost to Sen. Elissa Slotkin in 2024, by less than 0.5 percentage points.
