Atlanta’s Democratic Mayor, Andre Dickens, has faced backlash after telling a constituent, Jonathan Brimer, to “shut up” regarding concerns over voter-approved transit commitments. This exchange occurred following a video Dickens posted on Instagram, highlighting his visit with Nature Gurlz, a local group encouraging outdoor activities for Black women.
Brimer pressed the mayor on transportation priorities, urging efforts to restore Peachtree Street’s pedestrian-friendly design and prioritize Beltline rail projects funded by extra sales taxes for MARTA. This criticism follows violent transit attacks in cities like Atlanta, fueling calls for better tracking of repeat offenders.
Dickens responded, urging Brimer to “respect our legacy Black women residents that made this city that you get to enjoy freely.” Brimer expressed surprise at the response, not expecting agreement but also not anticipating such a dismissal. The mayor’s office declined to comment on whether Dickens personally authored the reply or intended to apologize.
Brimer clarified that his comments aimed at the mayor’s policies, not the women highlighted in Dickens’ post. He criticized the mayor’s transportation decisions, including a planned $4.85 million Peachtree Street safety project scheduled from 2027 to 2029. His Beltline concerns related to the More MARTA program, which paused the Streetcar East Extension at 30% design as officials reprioritized projects.
Dickens also criticized the DNC for ignoring Atlanta as a potential host for the 2028 Democratic National Convention, emphasizing the South’s and Black voters’ contributions. The DNC chose Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia as potential sites but did not disclose reasons for excluding Atlanta and Chicago, despite receiving strong applications from all cities.
The DNC stressed criteria such as arena size, hotel capacity, fundraising, and local partnerships in selecting the final host city, anticipated later this year. DNC Chairman Ken Martin praised the three remaining cities’ strong bids and expressed ongoing collaboration with them.
Fox News Digital attempted to reach the Beltline but did not get a response.
