Ravens Face Challenges With Lamar Jackson’s Injury and Contract

Lamar Jackson has consistently been a challenging opponent for every NFL team facing the Baltimore Ravens over the past nine years. Yet now, the Ravens confront a significant issue with Jackson after his arrival in Baltimore in 1996. Jackson requires surgery on his right thumb, injured during the game against the Buffalo Bills. This injury could place him on injured reserve, potentially sidelining him for the remainder of the season according to coach Jesse Minter.

The positive news is the clarity about his current status. The negative aspect is the uncertainty about what follows. Jackson’s presence has transformed the Ravens into playoff contenders whenever he has been healthy. Now, there’s the possibility that Jackson may have played his last game for the Ravens.

The challenge is compounded by Jackson’s ongoing battles with health issues, coupled with complex contract and salary cap challenges in 2027. The Ravens may face a decision between continuing with an expensive Jackson, despite his frequent injuries, or trading him with his consent due to a no-trade clause.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s status against the Buffalo Bills prompts questions about his future with the team.

The situation is fundamentally about financial strategy rather than emotion. Jackson’s contract contributes $84.34 million to the salary cap next year, with the team already projected to exceed the cap by $45.9 million. This situation requires strategic decision-making. Should Jackson be healthy and performing well, the Ravens might negotiate a contract extension that reduces his cap impact. However, the club may no longer see this as feasible given his injury situation, leaving his future with the team in doubt.

Jackson’s previous negotiations with the Ravens included securing a $230 million deal after prolonged talks in the 2023 offseason. He now expects to be the highest-paid player in the league with his next extension, not wanting to risk playing on an expiring contract.

This season, filled with potential at its start, has now turned uncertain. The Ravens might have to reconsider how to approach Jackson’s contract due to his injuries and their financial constraints.

Colts Consider Options for Daniel Jones

The Indianapolis Colts are currently making decisions about their lineup, including evaluating Daniel Jones after a tough loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although coach Shane Steichen noted the importance of improvement, he affirmed Jones remains the best option for now. However, given the team’s recent trades of Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, it may be wise to consider trading Jones before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.

The Minnesota Vikings, dealing with Kyler Murray’s injuries, might benefit from acquiring Jones, which could enhance their playoff hopes. Trading Jones could provide the Colts with draft picks for future opportunities.

Cardinals and Jacoby Brissett

The Arizona Cardinals have shifted focus from Jacoby Brissett to Gardner Minshew as the starting quarterback. Coach Mike LaFleur demoted Brissett to the emergency QB role, highlighting the possibility of trading him by the deadline to a team where his skills might be more appreciated.

Moving forward with this strategy could yield assets for Arizona while giving Brissett a chance to contribute meaningfully elsewhere.
